10 reasons why I choose email marketing over social media

Email is still relevant in 2023 - in fact, it's more relevant than ever!

Here are 10 reasons why:

1) Sky-high engagement & conversion

πŸ’₯ If you read one reason, read this one:

According to Hootsuite,

"As of July 2023, the average engagement rate of an organic Facebook post ranges from 2.58% down to just 1.52%."

That should cut deep as an organization that publishes organic content almost exclusively (organic = not paid).

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ You want to know the national average engagement rate for an email? 21%.

πŸ‘© You want to know my engagement rate for this newsletter? 71%.

Would you rather have 2/100 people interact with your content or 71/100?

2) You own your list & no algorithm can change that

If MailChimp suddenly makes a change you don't like, you can export your list and move to a different provider. You'll never lose access to your people.

3) Email was not engineered for shallow, addictive distraction - it can't be interrupted by advertisements or flashy interfaces that pull audience members away from your content.

4) Longer content lifespan

If you post on social media at the end of the workday, it will be buried by newer content by later that night. Oof.

Most people check their email daily and some crazy people even try for inbox (0).

5) Email encourages a more personal connection

In many ways, email is more similar to πŸ“¬ letter writing than digital marketing. What relationships could you foster with email that you couldn't on socials? With members? Parents? Prospects?

6) You control the experience you want your readers to have - you can create a curated on-brand experience with template designs.

7) You can segment your list and target specific groups for free!

The only way to target specific demographics on social media is to run paid ads. If you're on top of tagging your subscribers, you are always able to send a targeted message to the group that needs it most.

8) Email readers are in the right headspace to internalize information & get things on a calendar - I can't say the same about my own brain when I'm mindlessly scrolling on Insta.

9) Email enables you to deliver high quality value directly in the form of PDFs & links - see my newsletter about Lead Magnets.

10) Your readers invited you inside the walls of their 🏰 email castle 🏰

I have a junk email that I use for Old Navy rewards. I have a personal email that I gave to my church. I genuinely care about receiving communications from them & intend on reading them.

What are your thoughts? How are you utilizing the strengths of email? I'd love to hear.

It can feel yucky to set quantitative goals when your primary goal is to simply love people... I get that! The last thing we want to feel like is a used car salesman, just hustling to hit his quota. A SMART goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Setting SMART goals and remaining true to your mission are not mutually exclusive. For example: Instead of telling your congregation members to invite their friends to Christmas Eve, set a SMART goal along the lines of,...

I was writing a presentation recently and realized something huge... You're not ready for this πŸ‘€ As a business account, your follower reach is between 1.5% and 3%. Translation: If your business has 1000 social media followers, 22 of them will see your post. As a personal account, your reach is between 20% and 50%. Think about times when you've posted an Instagram story and scrolled through the number of people who viewed it... Translation: If you have 1000 social media followers, 350 of them...

Here's a content idea for your weekly newsletter: Here's a little extra content for you to plug into the next few weeks of regular communication to your people. Maybe you can add it to a portion of your newsletter or send out a quick mass text for the next few weeks. This content shows people five ways to use your online presence to amplify their word-of-mouth outreach. This is education for your insiders, not your prospectsβ€”so make sure you properly filter any communications you send. Pay...
